Disney World with kids: a simple 5-day plan

A family's first Walt Disney World week for parents with kids about 6 to 12. Magic Kingdom first, one sit-down if you want it, and a midday break when the group runs out of steam.

I will match dates, a resort, tickets, and dining to your kids' ages and energy. No planning fees. Send Request.

Who this is for

School-age kids, not a four-park sprint

First trip: Magic Kingdom is the main event. If you have a dedicated Star Wars or Toy Story kid, we can give Hollywood Studios more weight and still start with Magic Kingdom.

Mixed energy: One child will close the park. Another is done after lunch.

Simple week: Not four parks in four days and premium dining every night.

Wheelchair or scooter: Same parks, same entrances, same buses, boats, and Skyliner. Show seating is different. Some rides have a separate boarding door. Mention it on the form so the hotel and the midday break are realistic.

Wrong page?: Adult kids, use Disney World with adult kids and grandparents. Only two adults, use the couples page. Starting at Disneyland? Say that on the form. The pace is the same. The first park is Disneyland Park, not Magic Kingdom.

What success looks like

A week the family can finish

Under 5: They may remember the photos more than the trip. That is fine if you know it going in.

The week: One park start most days. One sit-down if the kids can handle a restaurant. A break after lunch when it gets hot. Fireworks if you can sit down for them, not if it means dragging a spent child across the park.

Reset: A tantrum is not a moral failure. It is a signal to go back to the room. Keep paid extras light so you can leave if a kid is done.

A simple 5-day shape

Magic Kingdom twice if they are little. Animal Kingdom as the gentler third park. EPCOT if you want a princess sit-down or the kids will actually eat and walk World Showcase. Arrive, three full park days, last day flexible. That is four nights in a hotel unless you add a night on either end. This is the skeleton I start from.

Day 1: Arrive and settle

Park: None. Explore the hotel and get unpacked.

Pace: A meal at the resort or at Disney Springs. Do not force a full park day after a flight.

Day 2: Magic Kingdom

Park: Magic Kingdom. First full day. Littles have the most to see here.

Pace: If energy is high, stay for fireworks from a table or a decent view. If energy is gone, leave.

Day 3: Hollywood Studios

Park: Hollywood Studios. Shorter list.

Pace: Midday break if anyone is cooked. Not a hopper day on a first trip.

Day 4: Animal Kingdom

Park: Animal Kingdom. Default for younger kids. Slower day. Good when you want a full day without a ride-heavy park.

Pace: Walk, animals, a show, midday break if anyone is cooked. If construction has a land closed, you still have enough for a kid day. You do not need to stretch it into the night.

Day 5: Second Magic Kingdom, or EPCOT

Park: Second Magic Kingdom, or EPCOT if you booked that princess meal or the kids are on the older side. Some EPCOT rides will skip the shorter kids.

Pace: Pack before you park if you checkout that morning.

Note: If tickets or a late flight change Day 5, say that on the form. I will not stack a non-cancellable dinner on a departure day with tired kids. Disneyland first-timers use the same shape: first two full days in Disneyland Park, Day 3 in California Adventure.

Book ahead

What to lock in first

Price: Room, tickets, flights, food, and extras before you book any piece of it.

Hotel: Space for everyone, a clear way to the parks, and something else to do when you leave (pool, playground, or a simple hotel activity). A value or moderate room you actually return to at 2 p.m. beats a suite you only sleep in.

Tickets: On this 5-day shape I usually look at 3 or 4 park days first. I would not buy a fifth park day on habit. First trip: no park hopper.

Dining: One table-service meal in the week is enough for most first trips. Keep it light. Skip premium dining unless you already know the kids will sit and eat. If the goal is several princesses and photos, compare Cinderella's Royal Table with the EPCOT princess meal. The EPCOT table is often the better price. You still make that reservation in your Disney account.

Lightning Lane: Magic Kingdom is the one I would consider with little kids. Not every park.

Stroller: Yours, a rental, or none. Park rentals stay in the park. A stroller from the hotel travels both ways.

Water: Pack bottles or plan refills. Heat and walking sneak up. A melted afternoon is often dehydration first.

How I help

Plan: Match Magic Kingdom-heavy days to young kids.

Hotel: Pick a hotel you can return to at 2 p.m. if needed.

Keep: Dining and Lightning Lane in proportion to ages and budget.

Compare: Packages vs pieces before you pay.

Book: Walt Disney World at no planning fee to you.

Note: This is a starting shape, not a timed itinerary. I will plan a start park and a way back to the hotel. I will not plan a week that only works if every child behaves like a brochure. More Disney planning: Disney. Also: couples 5-day and adult kids and grandparents.
